About the exhibition
Meredith Ward Fine Art presents the online exhibition, Modernism on Paper. The show highlights the ways in which 20th-century artists used what had traditionally been considered "minor" media - drawing, pastel, gouache and watercolor - to create highly original and innovative work that advanced the modernist cause. In doing so, these artists intentionally overturned historic prejudices about these techniques being used only for studies, or as the pastimes of amateurs, and instead exploited the spontaneity, rapidity, portability, and improvisational qualities of these media to create a new language of modernism.
